Ashdown House is another nearby National Trust property in Berkshire which features spectacular views across the Berkshire Downs and includes an Iron Age hill fort where King Alfred is thought to have battled the Danes. Just across the River Thames is the beautiful Grade I listed former farmhouse Kelmscott Manor. The summer home of the artist William Morris, Kelmscott was described by him as a work of true craftsmanship, totally unspoilt and unaltered, and in harmony with the village and the surrounding countryside.
